What To Do If Stopped By The Police

What are some of the reasons why I might get pulled over?

There are numerous reasons that could result in you being stopped by the police:

  • You may have been observed committing a traffic violation.
  • You or your vehicle may match the description of a suspect.
  • It might appear to the officer that you are in trouble or need help.
  • You may have witnessed or have information on a recent crime.

Traffic stops are stressful!

It is normal for you to feel anxious and sometimes confused when you are stopped by the police. Some people even become angry. The situation is also stressful for the police officer. Every year many officers are killed or injured while conducting traffic stops.

What should I do if I get pulled over?

  • Stay in your car unless directed by the officer otherwise.
  • Keep your hands on the steering wheel so the officer can see them.
  • Avoid making sudden movements.
  • Remain calm; getting agitated with the officer will not help the situation.
  • Do not become alarmed if a second police car pulls up. Most cars are staffed by only one officer and it is common for another officer to provide backup.
  • Texas law requires you to display your license and proof of insurance at the request of a police officer.
  • If it is dark, turn on your dome or interior light so the officer can see that all is in order.
  • If you are unsure of the reason for the stop, ask the officer for more details.
  • If you receive a citation take it calmly; it is not an admission of guilt.
